Pick the best siding for your home

There are a lot of different reasons why people decide to change their home siding. Sometime it’s a functional issue where they want to improve their protection from the elements, while for others it’s purely about aesthetics and getting the best look for their homes. But regardless of the reason, it’s important to be informed while considering different home siding options. Take these factors into account while talking to your general contractor about what your choice will be.

Think about the specialty features

When you look at different styles, materials and colors, there are a lot of things to consider, but Consumer Reports magazine reminded homeowners to check out the special features of each siding option. If you live in an area prone to high winds or hurricanes, think about a double-nailing hem so that when the gusts blow your siding will stay put. You should also look for siding options that are longer than others so that you have fewer seams visible on an exterior wall.

Consumer Reports also recommended that homeowners look for siding options with foam backing. The foam can help with stability of the siding as well as insulation for the home. According to Chris LoCascio, Director of Sales for the exterior department, “the most important factor when insulating your home besides the obvious is the ability to have your home breathe. Many insulating boards do not breathe as well as others.”

Pick the perfect color

As the San Francisco Chronicle’s House Guide advised, the best way to pick a color is from personal preference. Of course, this is easier said than done, but you shouldn’t be picking one to match other homes or a magazine cover – choose the shade that will make you the happiest every day when you drive down that driveway. Browns and greens are a warm and cozy option, the news source explained, but blue and gray can ooze serenity.

In addition to your own preference, you may want to consider a color that won’t fade in the sunlight and will accent other home features well, like your chimney.

Get the right material

Years ago, people mainly used wood siding, but now there are several options for families and homeowners to consider before refitting their homes. Each material type has different benefits, many of which come down to your preferences, home size and location.

Vinyl is a popular option. It’s inexpensive, durable and easily cleaned. Many homeowners like how it never needs to be painted and lasts for a very long time.

Fiberglass siding is another option. It is durable, has the true look of wood and it is extremely sturdy.

Another product that is becoming very popular today is stone. There are many different options of stone from real, to manmade veneer, to vinyl. The introduction of vinyl stone panels will give your home great curb appeal at a reasonable cost.
