How to Organize, Plan and Prepare for a Household Move

Moving is one of the most exciting things in the world, but it’s also one of the hardest. Having to pack all your possessions and take them to a new home takes a lot of time, energy, patience, and knowledge, which is why you need to start planning this process on time. There are tons of things you have to take into consideration, so put everything down and try not to forget even the slightest detail. This is why getting properly organized is so important, and if you too are planning to move soon as well, here are a couple of tricks that might help you do that more easily.

Declutter and prioritize

This is the first thing you need to do, and it’s a great way to start because of the numerous benefits that come with decluttering. Moving into a new home is a great excuse to throw away all those things you haven’t used in years, and it doesn’t matter how sentimental and emotional you are – if you don’t need them, they have to go!

Once you start looking at your possessions and thinking about them, you’ll surely realize how many things you don’t need. From your worn-out clothes and your childhood memorabilia to your travel souvenirs and your old yard equipment – these are the things you won’t be using in your new home, so there’s no need to move them at all. Instead, donate them, sell them, or simply throw them away, and you’ll make your move and your life a lot easier!

Keep updating your list

The minute you decide that you’re going to move, you need to find a notebook, put a giant label “THE MOVE” on the front cover, and write down every single thing that comes to your mind in it. The list of things you’ll take with you, the names of people who might be helping you in the process, the list of items you have to purchase for your new home, the amount of money you have in your moving budget, and everything else – write it all down in as many details as you can.

Another thing you need to do with your notebook is updating it regularly. As soon as something significant happens or you complete a certain stage of the move, you should note it down and cross it off your list. This will keep you motivated and productive at all times, and help you complete your move more quickly than you could’ve anticipated.

Leave certain things to professionals

Doing everything on your own and being a part of the process is great, especially if you’re one of those people who love being informed and involved, but is this the best way to go? Well, it’s probably not, unless you’re a professional mover yourself and can get everything done in just a couple of days. If that’s not the case, you should get some help and leave certain things to professionals.

This is a method people all over are using, and you might consider doing the same as well. You can find moving experts wherever you want, and there is even a helpful moving app that could help you in the process. Relying on professionals is beneficial on a number of levels, and while these people are handing your possessions, you can concentrate on packing your essential items, saying goodbye to your neighbors, or coming up with an unpacking schedule.

Don’t forget about unpacking

Speaking of unpacking, this is one of those things that most people seem to forget when they’re moving. Most of us focus on packing our stuff most quickly and sensibly as possible, but what we often forget is that we’ll have to unpack all those things once we move into our new home. And since the chances are your home will be empty and at least partially unfurnished when you arrive, doing this won’t be as easy as it sounds. If there’s a chance, talk to your contractors to remodel your kitchen first to make it work for you since the first day you move in.

That’s why coming up with a proper schedule is the key to a successful unpacking process. The secret to doing that efficiently is quite simple to understand – it’s all about knowing exactly where your possessions are and how to reach the box you need at a certain moment without losing too much time or energy. Remember to label your boxes and number them as well, and then write down what’s in each box in your moving notebook, because this easy system will help you unpack quickly and effortlessly.

Moving is never easy, no matter where you’re going, how big your family is, and how many boxes of stuff you have. Still, it’s the first step in the next phase of your life, and that’s why approaching this process carefully is so important!
