Ways to Landscape Your Garden to Compliment Your Porch

What is the first thing you notice about a house once you drive by it? What is it that draws your eye to look at a particular location? Is it the color of the siding or the finish on the wood and brick of a home? Is it the inviting front door painted a cheery color offset by a seasonal wreath? Maybe it’s the wraparound porch and the dazzling spread of flowers surrounding both sides of the steps. It’s most likely a combination of all of the above as the porch is the focal point for the front of a home.

The first thing that most people notice when looking at homes is the porch. Is it inviting? Is it welcoming? Can you picture yourself walking up that handmade walkway to those steps and being greeted by a friendly face? If you can, then the landscaping is done in such a way to compliment the porch of the home. If a home doesn’t look inviting and there is nothing surrounding the porch, you would be hard-pressed to give it a second look but once you see a complementary porch and landscaped lawn along with a landscaped garden; all bets are off and you want to see more.

That is why it is so important to landscape your garden to compliment your porch, whether it be for your own personal reasons for wanting to showcase your home with pride or you are looking to put the home on the market. Today we are going to talk about ways to landscape your garden to compliment your porch in an easy, effective and inexpensive way.

Choose Colors Within the Same Family

One of the easiest ways to landscape your garden to compliment your porch is to choose colors within the same family on the color wheel. Clashing colors in terms of both the porch, front door, and garden flowers can look garnish when combined all at once.

This doesn’t mean you have to choose only one type of flower or only one color but try to keep the rainbow spread of color to the flowers only. Choose discrete amounts of flowers and keep them in streamlined order, flanking each side of the porch.

The Front Door

One of the easiest ways to spruce up your home and add a touch of class is to change the color of the front door. Is your garden covered in bright spring colors once your flowers start to bloom? Then chose a color that compliments them for your front door. Think deep red or even a burnt orange – this color will transition from season to season with ease.

If changing the color of your front door is not possible at the time (the front door is solid wood, for example), why not use the addition of a seasonal wreath to spruce up the front of the home? Think wreaths of bright fall leaves and small decorative pumpkins, wreaths of acorns, holly and berries with bright red bows, and a wreath of rainbow colors during the spring and summer.

The Walkway

If you have a walkway leading from your driveway to your front porch, consider changing it up a bit; especially if it’s a dirt path worn over time from people using the same area for walking up to your front door.  Use a rake to spread crushed stone over the pathway or use patio stones to direct traffic to your front door. You can even build casing out of lumber and use pourable cement to create your own patio stones. Get your children and family members to immortalize the moment by casting their hand in the stones for a memory that will last a lifetime.

Another option is to line the walkway with solar lights that are found at any dollar store, department store or hardware store for a touch of whimsy while doubling as a safety precaution. The bonus thing about these lights is that they cost nothing to run but look great!

Conclusion

As you can see – a project such as this will require work, time and maintenance but it is achievable in the long run. Whatever your reasons for wanting to spruce up and landscape your garden, it is doable by yourself and when tied in with the look of your porch, it is priceless all around.

Landscaping requires maintenance, however, so it is important to have a few items on hand to complete both minor and major projects. Ensure that you have access to a sturdy pair of gardening gloves, a trowel,  a steel-topped shovel for getting rid of those pesky weeds, and a wheelbarrow for easier hauling and scooting of heavy bags of soil, flowers, and shrubs. Also make sure that you have a steady source of water for your plants and for safety reasons, invest in an Eley garden hose reel that organizes and keeps your garden hose out of sight along with off the grass, so no one trips over it.
